My coat

The gabardine overcoat was a gift from my father.

I can’t remember the occasion it was given,

my leaving home, my twenty-first.

What I do remember though is this:

the gabardine overcoat was charcoal black

and lined with silk. And it fitted me

like no other overcoat I’ve since owned,

except, it wasn’t then the sort of coat

I wanted to wear.

Poem for my father

At the hour of dawn

when the sun naively praises the world

travelling at enormous speed

my father enters his death

his eyes wide open

like those of a child

seeing a circus for the first time.
